Travel Guide: A Weekend in Berlin

Berlin (about 2 days)

Again, another old itinerary/ write up I originally published on Jewish Girls Travel.

HMU with questions, and safe travels!

xx Esther

My Itinerary

  • Fly into Tegel Airport (TXL), it’s closest to the city center and you can easily hop on the bus from there to the city. Super easy and fast, 20 mins by car or about 35 by bus.

  • When taking the train: buy a full day ticket, it’s prob the best value for your money (approx 7.4 euro for the day) and dont forget to validate it by scanning it into the machine at the station!

  • We stayed at Grimm Hotel am Potsdamer Platz, which was cute. Location wasn’t bad, excellent service, nice place.

Day One

  • International Beer Festival. Awesome!

  • Shop at Alexanderplatz Market (just a cool, happening space).

  • Museum Island--where all the museums are

Day Two

  • Free walking tour with Sandemans/NEw Europe Tours. About 2.5 hours. Amazing!

    • Brandenburg Gate

    • Hitler’s bunker

    • Jewish Memorial

    • Berlin Wall

    • Checkpoint Charlie

    • Lots of other interesting stuff :)

  • Jewish Museum/synagogue. 10 minutes walk from Mitte

    • You can check out the whole Jewish quarter there, we didn’t have time

    • The museum is small--you dont need a lot of time--but nice.

  • Cruise on the River Spree.

    • Our cruise was 1.5 hours, it was really nice but I dont suggest doing longer than that bc it gets boring.

You can also do a nighttime tour which we heard is nice.

General Info

Chabad: Alexanderplatz, Mitte (East Berlin)

Rabbi Nathan Zuckerman +4917684304709

This Chabad is for young ppl/ Israelis/ travelers. The rabbi is super friendly. Join them for a shabbat meal!

Kosher in Berlin

Berlin things to do

(this info is all from Jewish Girls Travel, so it’s very Jewish food/attraction centered)

  • free walking tour of the city

I did one in Berlin, Germany last week and it was awesome! I really felt like I saw the entire city in the 3 hours we walked around, and it was great since I had very limited time to sightsee. We saw the Memorial to the Murdered Jews, Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Hitler's Bunker, German parliament, some nice cathedrals, famous squares and more.

  • boat tour along the river spree

  • Potsdam to see the beautiful palaces (took the S-Bahn train and then a bus to the palace area). It was such a cute, quaint town - I highly recommend checking it out and walking around.

  • Walking tour of postdam aka palace city (the tour is 6 hours long and costs 14 euro)

  • East side gallery

  • 4 day itinerary of Berlin here https://www.minutebyminutetraveller.com/berlin-itinerary

  • Tip: You need a reservation for the tour, but the capitol bullilding (Bunderstag I think) is really cool and lets you out on their roof. It's also within walking distance of the Holocaust museum and the memorial.

  • So much to do in berlin. See the jewish mitte neighborhood, the television tower, jewish museum...memorial for the murdered jews of Europe, sachsenhausen, concentration camp, museum island

  • Light festivals

  • The berlin wall and the holocaust memorial

  • Sachsenhausen concentration camp tour

  • I'm a big fan of walking tours, and enjoyed the ones I did in Berlin. http://www.berlinwalks.de/public/. The main tour covers a lot of the main sites and history, including the Holocaust memorial and the book burning memorial. All of the museums on Museum Island are good, especially the Pergamon, even with the main attraction not on view right now due to restoration. I would also recommend a day trip to the summer palaces in Potsdam. On the way you can stop at platform 17-Grunewald where there is a memorial to deported Jews. All over Berlin on the ground there are "stumbling stones" in the sidewalk with memorials to Jews who used to live in those spots.

Recommendations from Berlin friends:

  • TV tower: view berlin from above https://tv-turm.de/en/homepage/

  • Boat tours https://www.visitberlin.de/en/boat-tours-berlin is the weather is good. Can do night or day.

  • East Side Gallery (the wall) http://www.eastsidegallery-berlin.com

  • Mitte (alexanderplatz) is a great location, central to everything. Just walk around the area, the old center of berlin, small shops

  • Lots of palaces

  • Tegel is the best airport to come into as its closest to central berlin

  • Treptower Park: can rent a donut boat with a bbq in the middle Badeschiff: right near club der visionnaire. Outdoor baths floating on the spree

Here are just some ideas of where to go shopping and exploring:

Best way to get around is to rent a bike and ride around.

There are dedicated bike lanes on the sidewalks, and you can get around the city really quickly and efficiently by bike.

Jumbo Second Hand:

wonderful boots and clothes

Here's the info for Jumbo Second Hand: Wiener Straße 63, 10999 Berlin, Germany

You have to spend a day wandering in the Mitte neighborhood along Mulacksträsse, Alte Schonhauser, Neue Schonhauser, Auguststraße, Sophienstrasse, Glipsstraße.

You can take the train to Hakeckesher Market or to Rosenthaler Platz and wander from there.

This area is full of coffee shops, restaurants, plenty of old school vintage shops, local berlin designer stores, and random quirky one-off spots.

Here are some stores you should specifically look for in that area:

Made In Berlin: 2 floors of vintage and new clothing and an amazing vintage shoe/boot collection.

Starstyling: Mulackstraße 4

Trippy vibes clothing. I bought shiny shirts and fringe tye-died necklaces here for burning man.

Here are some other stores that sound cool:

Das Neue Schwarz (the new black) : Mulackstraße 38

Superconscious: WEINBERGSWEG 22

Konk Berlin: Kleine Hamburger Straße 15

Other great neighborhoods to wander in are Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg.

In P-Berg, take the U2 to U2 Eberswalder Strasse and walk along Kastanienallee, Schonhauser allee, prenzlauer allee, and am friedrichshain.

And here's a few more specific stores in Prenzlauer Berg that I remember being good:

Oder Barfuß: Oderberger Str 14 10435 Berlin

Soeur: Marienburger Str. 24 10405 Berlin

Hillys: Kollwitzstr. 39 10405 Berlin

In general, Berlin is famous for its nightlife--try out the different clubs!
